Research into Handwriting

image A new study has found that children with autism are often found to have significant trouble with handwriting.  The study included 28 children, ages 8 to 13.  Half of the study participants have autism spectrum disorder, but all of the children scored twice in the Normal Range for perceptual reasoning on an IQ test.  The overall handwriting quality was poor in children with autism.  Researchers say the results show that more therapy directed on motor skills may improve handwriting in children with autism.

“Our results suggest that therapies targeting motor skills may help improve handwriting in children with autism, which is important for success in school and building self-esteem,” study author Amy Bastian, of the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, said in a news release from the American Academy of Neurology. “Such therapies could include training of letter formation and general training of fine motor control to help improve the quality of their writing.”

I found this study particularly interesting is due to my son’s poor and writing skills, something that has caused him trouble from the very beginning.  While his hand eye coordination has improved drastically making him able to use a computer with a mouse, his handwriting has never really improved.  There some tasks that he simply cannot do such as tying his shoelaces.  He simply lacks the necessary dexterity in his fingers in order to complete the task.  It’ll be interesting to see if research continues in this area what the results will be.
